Alfred Krupa made this painting, Motocross on Dubovac, with what looks like pastels, and maybe some gouache or thinned oil paint. I love how the brown cardboard support peeks through, unifying everything. It’s like the ground, literally, for both the landscape and the action. The marks are so free, almost scribbled, but they build this amazing sense of movement. Notice the way the white streaks carve out the path, suggesting speed and dust. Then there are these tiny figures of the bikers, pops of red that draw your eye right into the heart of the scene. The colours are muted, earthy - browns, creams, whites, with just a touch of red to add some excitement. The texture looks soft and chalky, like a memory fading in and out. It puts me in mind of Joan Mitchell, maybe. There's the same kind of energy and willingness to let the medium do its thing. It's a reminder that art isn't about perfection, it's about capturing a feeling, a moment, an experience. It's about being brave enough to let go and see what happens.
