Henry Meyers made this drawing of a pewter mug, but when? We don't know. Look at the silvery sheen of the mug, so carefully rendered in graphite! I wonder if Henry was trying to capture the way light reflects off its surface, or maybe he was just interested in the mug's simple, solid form. The mug sits squarely in the center, surrounded by technical drawings, almost like an engineer’s blueprint. It’s not gestural or painterly but still it makes me think about how we approach observation. The handle is calling to me: it looks like a question mark! And what about the small detailed drawings in the corner, almost like secret messages or clues? What was Henry thinking when he made this drawing? Was it an exercise, a study, or something more personal? Whether it’s a quick sketch or a carefully planned composition, each drawing is a record of an artist's encounter with the world, an attempt to capture a fleeting moment or to understand the underlying structure of things, in an ongoing conversation across time, inspiring creativity.
