Curator: Josef Herman’s lithograph, "The Cart", immediately strikes one with its stark simplicity. The dark inks create such a dramatic tonal scale. Editor: There’s a certain rawness to the textures created by the lithographic process here, isn’t there? It speaks to the labor involved in the image itself, and perhaps also in the subject's daily toil. Curator: Precisely. The composition is deceptively sophisticated, the artist used the empty space as counterpoint to the solid blacks of the figures. Editor: I am very intrigued by this—how it connects to the role of the printmaker within the art world and the hierarchies inherent in artistic production. Curator: It's a work where form and content are inextricably linked, isn't it? Editor: Absolutely, revealing layers of both aesthetic and social meaning.
