Editor: Here we have Johann Heinrich Meil's "Fabel van het woord van Socrates", an engraving from 1758. The level of detail is captivating for such a small print. It gives me a peaceful feeling. What strikes you when you look at it? Curator: Well, as a materialist, I see the print itself as a product of very specific social and economic conditions. How does the mass production of images through engraving affect the dissemination of philosophical ideas? Editor: That's a great question! I hadn't considered the implications of printing for the spread of thought in that period. Curator: Exactly. Think about the engraver's labor, the availability of paper, and the market for these images. The seemingly simple act of creating and distributing this print is embedded in a complex web of material relationships. Does knowing that the labor required to create such prints could be exploitative change your view of the “peaceful feeling?” Editor: It does a little, I suppose. I was initially just thinking about the idyllic scene. It shifts my perspective to think about the socio-economic landscape behind its production. Is the narrative depicted also reflective of material concerns? Curator: Indeed. Consider the story of Socrates – a philosopher who challenged the status quo. How might the engraver be subtly commenting on the material conditions of his own society through this fable? And, whose stories get told, and how are those narratives themselves a product of material power? Editor: That’s fascinating. I guess I hadn’t really considered how deeply the material world and social context are interwoven in even a seemingly simple engraving. Curator: Precisely. Examining the materials and methods brings so much more to light. Editor: Absolutely, I will never look at prints the same way again!
