Editor: So, Dorothea Tanning’s "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," undated, depicts a rather unsettling hotel hallway. The massive sunflower definitely grabs your attention. How do you interpret this work? Curator: Ah, yes. It’s like walking into a dream, isn't it? Tanning often explored the subconscious, and to me, the sunflower isn't just a flower. It’s an explosion of repressed desires, a vibrant counterpoint to the sterile, institutional hallway. The girls seem caught between innocence and…something else. Don't you think? Editor: I do, especially with the open door at the end of the corridor. I hadn’t considered the idea of "repressed desires" exactly. Curator: It's like a psychic pressure cooker. The longer you look, the more the mundane transforms into the bizarre. Editor: I get it now, what appeared to be a scary painting, now I see the subtle elements.

This scene of a dreary hotel corridor appears haunted by unnatural forces. The oversized sunflower on the landing is strangely animated. A life-size doll leans in a doorway while the long hair of a girl stands on end, blown by the wind. These unexpected elements suggest childhood fantasies and nightmares, and echo elements of the Gothic novels that Tanning loved. The title, ‘A Little Night Music’, is borrowed from one of Mozart’s most light-hearted chamber works and appears to be used ironically. Gallery label, February 2011
