This 'Secretary, commode and table' was created by Friedrich Frickhinger. The first impression is of a sturdy circular plane of patterned wood supported by a mass of dark carvings. The contrast between the two creates a dramatic sense of weight and balance. The table's design suggests a clear structural hierarchy. The smooth, flat top, inlaid with decorative motifs, speaks of rationality and order. This contrasts sharply with the base, where carved winged lions writhe in elaborate Baroque extravagance. The table thereby destabilizes established meanings through its unexpected combination of geometric form with organic exuberance. The visual language of the table is rooted in semiotics. The circular form might symbolize wholeness or continuity, while the animal motifs could signify strength and protection. In the end, the table is a site of ongoing interpretation and re-interpretation, a conversation between form and function, order and chaos.

German-born Blechschmidt worked for leading Paris cabinetmakers and specialized in colourful marquetry (inlaid work) in various materials. He used an Italian Renaissance style for the marquetry here. Friedrich Frickhinger, one of his pupils and also a German active in Paris, made the furniture. He placed his signature and the date, 1834, on the inside of the secretary.
