Jakob Danielsen made this watercolour on paper and it's like he painted it in one breath. Just look at that pale, wintery light, how it hits the snow. I can almost feel Danielsen right there, sketching quickly as the people move across the land. I bet he made it in one sitting. The thin paint helps him capture the figures in motion, their long shadows. It reminds me of some of the early 20th-century landscape painters, who were trying to capture a direct experience of the world around them, and painting it just as fast as the world spins. There is a sense of isolation as well, which makes me wonder whether Danielsen saw himself as part of a community. Whatever the story, he was part of a long tradition of artists trying to depict what it means to be human. We're all trying to figure it out together, aren't we?
