Ruth M. Barnes, who lived from 1855 to 1995, made this hooked rug of wool or a similar material. I can almost feel it between my fingers... I imagine the artist deeply focused, pulling the yarn through the backing, each loop a deliberate act. She carefully considers the composition: the field of warm browns, and the lively spray of flowers in red, white, and purple. The border is so decorative and charming, and has a naive, folk quality. I like how the artist has used black outlines, and the little beads of brighter colour along the border. I can imagine Barnes, a woman living in the late 19th and early 20th century, finding joy and purpose in crafting such beautiful, functional objects for the home. Hooked rugs aren't exactly high art, but they're art nonetheless. There's an intention, an artistry, and an understanding of colour at play here that connects Barnes to generations of artists who came before and after her. It’s a reminder that art is everywhere, in the grandest museum and in the most humble, handmade object.
