Victor Palmov's 'Dancing Woman' is a vortex of peachy hues, blacks and greens, brought to life with oil on canvas. I can imagine him, brush in hand, circling the canvas, each stroke a dance step in itself. I sympathize with Palmov, trying to capture that fleeting moment of movement, of joyous abandon. The paint is thick in places, a testament to his layering, his searching. The textured lace of her skirt feels like a found object, a scrap of memory glued onto the scene. The energetic diagonals give a feeling of dynamism, like figures in motion that you might see in Umberto Boccioni's work. It feels like she’s dancing right off the canvas and into our space. Artists are constantly building on each other's ideas, and Palmov is part of this beautiful, messy conversation. It is a painting that doesn't offer easy answers but instead invites us to feel, to imagine, to dance along with it.
