Editor: Angela Bulloch’s *West Ham - Sculpture for Football Songs* features four light sculptures. The glowing one really grabs my attention. How do you interpret this work in light of its title? Curator: Well, the title points us towards football culture. Consider the social context of football fandom. Do you think these lights, perhaps blinking or changing colors, could represent the collective energy and shared experience of a crowd singing football songs? Editor: That’s interesting! Maybe the single colored light stands for the excitement of a game. Curator: Exactly. Bulloch often explores how technology shapes our experiences. The sculpture almost visualizes a team's ups and downs as a public performance. What do you make of that idea? Editor: I see it! It's cool how she connects technology with such raw human emotions.

Bulloch has made a number of works using Belisha beacons, which are more commonly used to illuminate pedestrian crossings. Here they are linked to a microphone in the gallery space and respond to sound, which initiates a sequence of flashing lights. The colours of the lights reflect the colours of the West Ham football strip, and the work’s title suggests that football anthems are a particularly appropriate trigger to speed up the light display. The unpredictable interactive element of this work is typical of Bulloch’s practice. Gallery label, December 2006
