Shibano Ritsuzan created this hanging scroll with ink on paper some time in the late 18th or early 19th century. It presents a poetic couplet, a traditional form of Chinese poetry that found its way into Japanese artistic and intellectual life. The image speaks to the deep cultural exchange between China and Japan, particularly among the elite classes. Ritsuzan was a Confucian scholar, and his calligraphy reflects the emphasis that such scholars placed on artistic expression as a mark of refinement and moral character. Japan at this time was still structured around rigid social hierarchies, and the arts served as a means for the upper classes to distinguish themselves. This work subtly reinforces those class distinctions. Understanding the nuances of this piece requires us to delve into the history of Confucianism in Japan, the social structure of Edo period Japan, and the specific artistic conventions of the time. These are the kind of things art historians consider when trying to interpret works like this.
