This is a Predicta Princess television made by the Philco Radio and Television Corporation. It is such a great mix of futuristic optimism with a cozy, domestic feel. I really enjoy how the set is constructed, with its rounded screen perched atop its boxy, speaker-like base, it's like a head on a body, a very cartoonish body! I love the gold trim, it gives the whole thing a kind of glamorous edge, especially with the red cabinet. I think the designers were trying to make something functional also feel a little bit like a sculpture. And I think they succeeded. It reminds me of the work of artists like Yayoi Kusama, who take ordinary objects and transform them into something playful and surreal, using color and form to create new ways of seeing and experiencing the world. And isn't that what good art - or even good TV - is all about?
