Robert Frank made this contact sheet, "At Ben Schultz's--Southampton 1B," with a camera and film, resulting in a series of still images that offer a glimpse into a moment in time. I love how Frank captures fleeting instances of everyday life, turning them into something worth pausing over. I imagine Frank developing this roll of film in the darkroom. What was he thinking as these images began to materialize in the developing solution? Which of these many images would he choose to print? Was he looking for a single standout moment, or was he considering the narrative that emerged from the sequence as a whole? It's almost like a painter with a canvas, layering and editing, trying to find the right composition. Look at the softness of the black and white tones. It's like a whisper, a memory, and these grainy images have a texture that draws you in, inviting you to contemplate the relationships between these people. This work reminds me of the way many artists use photography—as a sketchbook, or source material, a jumping-off point for further exploration in other mediums.
