This textile, printed with game birds, was created by Bannister Hall. The eye is immediately drawn to the all-over pattern of game birds nestled amongst lush foliage. The repetition of motifs such as palm trees, flowers and birds creates a sense of rhythmic visual harmony. The textile's design operates on a semiotic level, where each element functions as a signifier. Birds and flora are not merely decorative; they evoke ideas of nature and abundance. The structure of the repeat, however, suggests an artificiality. Note that the design doesn't mimic nature but presents an ordered, controlled version of it. The textile challenges conventional notions of the natural versus the artificial. It invites us to contemplate the cultural codes which shape our understanding of nature and its representation in art. The printed textile becomes a site where nature and artifice, reality and representation, intersect.
