Kevin MacDonald made '8th Grade Dance', probably with pencil on paper. I find myself wondering what it would be like to step into this quiet, kind of awkward space. There’s a tangible softness in the way he coaxes light and shadow with such delicate marks. You can almost feel the subtle texture of the paper. It is as though he’s inviting us into a private reverie. The pale hues, mostly in the grey and brown families, blend together in such a way that everything is harmonious, if a little austere. Look at the faint glow around the edges of the columns – they add to the dreamlike quality of the scene. MacDonald's piece reminds me a little of Agnes Martin's work, in the sense that both artists are interested in the power of restraint, and using minimalist methods to evoke feelings of tranquility and contemplation. This isn't just a drawing; it's an atmosphere, an echo of a memory that we are all invited to bring our own interpretations to.
