Robert Huot made this 3 inch high 33 foot long Epoxy Paint Band at an unknown date, using epoxy paint, obviously. It's an enigmatic piece, a subtle intervention in an architectural space, which can be understood as an experimental approach to artmaking as a process. The work emphasizes the material aspects of art. Imagine the texture, the sheen of the epoxy, the smooth surface contrasting with the rough wall. The paint is opaque, a deliberate act of marking and defining space. There's a section near the corner, where the band neatly turns. It is so precise, so clean, you can see the clear intent. It reminds me of Sol LeWitt's wall drawings, with their emphasis on the idea over the execution, but where LeWitt is cool and detached, Huot is warm, embracing ambiguity and encouraging multiple interpretations.
