Eduard Schultze captured this man with a beard and glasses in a small format photograph. I’m trying to think back to when this was made, before all the digital fuss, and the labour, the patience, the smells of the darkroom. There is an art and craft in the making. I like how the sepia tones give it a warm and kind of dreamy feel. I wonder who this bespectacled man was, caught in a fleeting moment? What was he thinking about as he sat for the portrait? His eyes seem to be looking off to the side. I like his dark jacket and bow tie. There’s something so proper and old-fashioned about it. I guess it gives us a glimpse into a time and place. Schultze and other photographers are constantly inspiring me. It shows how image-making has evolved, and how the desire to capture and share moments remains a constant thread through history.
