Editor: This intriguing, untitled piece is a mixed-media painting by Sonaly Gandhi. The first thing that strikes me is the unusual pixelated or mosaic effect throughout the composition. How would you interpret the visual style here? Curator: Well, I am instantly drawn into how it manages to feel both incredibly intimate and yet detached at the same time, you know? It’s like viewing a deeply personal moment through a screen, which in this age… doesn't feel completely wrong. And these lush green and blue hues create an unusual visual coolness that almost contrasts with the sensuality. Look closely at how the gridded patterns obscure, and at the same time, highlight the contours. Editor: It’s true, it's like this disconnect – a digital layer almost censoring a very physical scene. The checkered pattern is really persistent in every single part of the representation, maybe the painting alludes to how we experience the body and intimate relations in the internet era. But it can also have artistic and painterly considerations that I may ignore. Do you think that this is an underlying motivation? Curator: The mosaic aspect brings in a touch of abstraction, urging you to piece together your own understanding of the narrative unfolding before you, just like connecting the dots with a dear friend in need or figuring yourself after your heart shattered. Consider it as Gandhi's artistic filter to make sense of bodies nowadays, and that’s something she can tell! The artist encourages us to reconsider this familiar image in our contemporary world, just from her inner experience. Editor: I hadn’t thought about the act of 'making sense.' That definitely shifts my perspective. It feels like it prompts self-reflection too. Curator: Right? You find yourself thinking less about the physical figures, more about your relationship to seeing. Editor: A new way of watching ourselves as people! It seems my journey with contemporary art is only beginning.
