Pedro Calapez made Folder #02 with paint, but what kind? Something matte? Or maybe it's just the lighting. Anyway, I'm picturing him there in his studio. He's probably got music on, right? Look at how the colors are laid down in these shapes. They remind me of the colored vinyl floor tiles from my childhood kitchen! But here, the colours aren’t contained. They're all skewed and abutted and bumping into each other. I love that bit of green creeping up from the bottom, it's grounded, like a landscape, and then all of a sudden it's a party of pinks and oranges. The red at the bottom right feels really deliberate, like the painting couldn't be complete without it. It's like he's saying, "Okay, I'm done here." Painters are always chatting with each other across time, inspiring each other's practice. And this piece, it's part of that conversation, where nothing is fixed.
