Folder #02 2009

Pedro Calapez made "Folder #02" with, what looks like, oil or acrylic paint. It's a fiesta of color, all these shapes bumping into each other like a crowded party! The paint has this cool, tactile quality—not too thick, not too thin, but just right, like Goldilocks found her perfect porridge. The surface feels smooth, but you can still see the hand of the artist in the way the colors meet. Look at that little patch of green down at the bottom, it’s like a burst of nature peeking out from under a pile of city buildings. It reminds me of Elizabeth Murray, how she took abstraction and made it feel like a conversation. Art's not about answers; it’s about asking questions and having a good time while you're at it.
