Niels Larsen Stevns made this sheet of sketches with a pencil on paper, at an unknown date. It’s hard to know what exactly Stevns was thinking when he put these figures down, but this page feels like a very personal glimpse into the artist’s process, a quiet moment of contemplation. See how light the marks are, as if he barely touched the paper? The lines are tentative, searching, with many of the figures drawn over and over, like he’s trying to find the right form. Check out the figures on the right; are they dancing? Or maybe they're just stretching. I love the way he captures movement with just a few quick strokes. It reminds me of some of Matisse’s line drawings, where he could convey so much with so little. In the end, it feels like these sketches aren’t really about capturing a specific image, but more about the act of drawing itself. They remind us that art is often about exploration, about the joy of making, even if the results are a little messy or ambiguous.
