Lamentation for Christ 1510

Hans Baldung's "Lamentation for Christ" is a powerful woodcut depicting the sorrow of Christ's death. The scene is set at the foot of the cross, with Christ's body lying limply on the ground. Three figures, Mary Magdalene, the Virgin Mary, and John the Evangelist, mourn his passing. Baldung's detailed rendering of their grief and the dramatic composition, with the figures grouped tightly around Christ, create a sense of overwhelming sorrow. The artwork, dated 1510, is a fine example of Northern Renaissance art and can be viewed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
