This is David Vermeulen’s photo album with pictures of Germany, Den Haag and Scheveningen. It's a small format, intimate, and the faded colour makes me wonder, was it always this mauve colour? The cover's ornate border is rather beautiful, somehow managing to be busy and restrained at the same time, with these alternating patterns of geometric and organic shapes. I imagine the person who designed it carefully considering the balance between detail and simplicity, wanting something decorative but not overwhelming. And then there's that gold lettering announcing 'Album' in a script that’s both elegant and a little bit playful. I'd bet that Vermeulen kept it close, revisiting the photographs over time, each viewing layering new meanings. It reminds me that art doesn't exist in a vacuum. It is a continuous exchange of ideas, where each artist builds upon the work of those who came before, in a kind of ongoing conversation across generations.
