G. Dangereux captured this small photograph of boats along a quay during the Paris flood. The sepia tones really lend to the scene’s feeling of quiet disruption, like the world has slowed down in response to the water’s rise. Look at how the light catches the surface of the water. You can almost feel the chill and dampness. The boats are densely packed, filled with unidentifiable objects, and their placement feels so precarious, as if they're just waiting for the next surge. It's reminiscent of some of Eugène Atget's photographs of Paris. Both artists seemed drawn to the city's quieter moments, capturing the everyday scenes that reveal a deeper story about the human experience. Dangereux uses photography to show us the strangeness of the familiar and suggests that art is not about finding definitive answers but embracing ambiguity.
