This preparatory drawing for Caspar David Friedrich's famous painting, *Two Men Contemplating the Moon*, shows three figures, two in cloaks and one in a hat, standing in profile as they gaze out at the ocean. The drawing's simple lines and the use of negative space create a sense of mystery and foreboding, characteristic of Friedrich's style. This drawing was made in 1813 and is now housed in the Städel Museum.
