David Young Cameron made this print, Cluny, using etching, a process of revealing an image. The surface has this incredible, almost velvety quality, achieved through layers of tiny, deliberate marks. Look closely, and you’ll notice the ornate archway, framing a glimpse into a shadowed space. The light catches the stone, giving it a tangible presence. It's all about texture here, the rough-hewn stone versus the smooth darkness beyond. The contrast is so suggestive. That dark space beyond the arch isn't just a void; it’s full of potential, a stage for our imaginations. I think of Piranesi, who explored the themes of light and dark and architectural space, creating images which invite introspection and contemplation. Like artmaking itself, this print is about suggestion, implication, and, ultimately, the stories we tell ourselves.
