Giovanni da Milano painted this tempera on wood, “Adoration of the Magi,” sometime in the mid-14th century. It depicts a key scene in the Christian narrative: the arrival of the three kings to worship the newborn Jesus. At this time, the Church held significant power in all aspects of life. Artists, like Giovanni, were often commissioned to create works for religious purposes. In the painting, the three kings represent different continents, as they kneel before Mary and Jesus, presenting gifts that symbolize the wealth and respect from around the world. Their richly colored robes and regal crowns signal status and power. Meanwhile, Mary is presented as a nurturing mother, her gentle gaze fixed on the infant. Yet, beyond the religious and political messaging, there is a human quality. The artist captures a sense of awe and reverence. The expressions on the faces of the kings convey a sense of wonder at the sight of the child, while Mary seems to embody maternal love and protection. The artwork reflects the societal values, class structures, and religious beliefs of the 14th century.
