This print, by LeRoy Neiman, is made with serigraphy, or silkscreen printing, which is a commercial printing technique for making posters and signage. Neiman turned it to fine art purposes, using bright, unmodulated colors to capture the energy of the golf course. The flat planes of color speak to the processes involved in screen printing. Each color had to be applied separately with a squeegee, through a prepared screen. This is an example of how what we might think of as an everyday process can be used in expressive, high-end ways. Golf, a game associated with leisure and wealth, here receives a democratic treatment through a common commercial medium, and Neiman's interest in the techniques is apparent. It is less about capturing an image, and more about the celebration of the materiality of ink and color in the service of a popular, commercial image. Thinking about the materials, making, and context helps us appreciate the full meaning of the artwork, and challenges the traditional divides between fine art and craft.
