Arnoud Schaepkens created this print, "Figures with punting poles on a floating raft" using etching. Schaepkens lived through a time of significant social and political change in the Netherlands, as industrialization transformed Dutch society, and class distinctions became more pronounced. This etching offers a window into the lives of working-class individuals. The figures, likely laborers, are depicted in a moment of transit or labor, punting along a waterway. The use of etching as a medium allowed for detailed lines and textures, capturing the play of light on the water's surface and the rough texture of the raft. Through this work, Schaepkens invites us to reflect on the labor and lives of the working class in the Netherlands during the 19th century, and the emotional connection to the landscapes that defined their world.
