It is the symbolic, if implicit, signification of wealth and bucolic fantasy. Editor: Absolutely, although, I would also underscore how images like these play into larger socioeconomic forces: Cooper making a product for bourgeois tastes in 19th century Britain. A representation of idealized rural life that simultaneously obscures the labor required to sustain such beauty. Curator: A useful and important intervention, one I might add, underscores how even apparently benign artworks bear layers of latent complexity when brought to light. Editor: Yes, so while this piece feels restful and picturesque, unpacking the details reveals more than initially meets the eye.
