James McBey made this etching, Ebbesfleet, sometime in the 20th century, and I’m really struck by the mark-making - it's all about capturing a feeling, a fleeting impression. Look at how McBey uses the etching needle - the lines are so delicate, almost like whispers on the paper. The texture is really interesting; it’s smooth, but you can still see the evidence of the artist’s hand, and it makes you want to reach out and touch it. Notice the way he’s built up the tones in the trees - it’s so light and airy, like a misty morning. Then you see how the animals are done with just a few strokes, but they really come to life. The marks are so fluid and free, they capture the essence of the place. It reminds me a little of Whistler, but McBey has his own distinct voice. To me, this print is not just a picture, it’s a feeling.
