Adolphe Mouilleron created this print, “Vrouw droogt zich af na het bad,” sometime in the 19th century. Mouilleron, who was born in the early 1820’s, was part of a generation navigating the complexities of representing the female form. Here, a woman is depicted in the intimate act of drying herself after a bath. This work comes from a moment when academic traditions met burgeoning ideas about realism. While the setting and subject position the image within established norms of the female nude, there’s also an attempt to capture a sense of everyday life. The woman's gaze, averted yet present, invites the viewer into a private moment, blurring the lines between observation and voyeurism. What does it mean to see oneself reflected in art that both celebrates and scrutinizes the body? This image prompts us to consider the nuanced ways in which identity is negotiated, challenging us to recognize both the historical gaze and the individual stories within.
