Giulio Carpioni created this study of figures with pen and brown ink in the mid-17th century, and it now resides at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The red chalk lends the figures a warm, fleshy quality, inviting us to consider the bodies' forms and their spatial relationships. The composition is fragmented, as the figures seem to float freely. Their grouping around a large vase juxtaposes stability with dynamism, particularly notable in the falling nude. This juxtaposition might reference classical antiquity and its ideals of balance, yet the sketch-like quality disrupts any sense of perfect harmony. The linear style, typical of preparatory sketches, serves here as a work of art in itself. The unfinished quality challenges traditional notions of completion and invites us to consider the artistic process, rather than a polished end product. The openness of the composition and the ambiguous narrative offer multiple points of entry and interpretation.
