Léopold Flameng created this small etching, "Kind met een gitaar," sometime in the 19th or early 20th century. The composition is dominated by the close-up depiction of a child, set against a dark, undefined background. Flameng uses a dense network of fine lines to model form and texture, creating a tonal range that articulates the soft contours of the child's face and clothing. Note how the light catches the forehead and cheeks, drawing our eye to the center of the work. Flameng's strategic use of chiaroscuro and line work gives the piece an intimate, almost sculptural quality. This intimate portrayal can be seen as an exploration of the self, where Flameng seems to examine identity through the structure of representation itself. The guitar, which is barely visible, becomes a symbolic element, adding a layer of complexity. It challenges traditional portraiture by inviting us to contemplate the interplay between appearance, representation, and identity.
