Owen Jones created "Illuminated Manuscripts No.3," which are vibrant lithographic plates. Jones was deeply influenced by his travels in the Mediterranean, including his time in Egypt and Spain. Jones' designs draw from a variety of historical sources, but it was his time studying the ornamentation of the Alhambra that had the biggest impact on him. Jones adapted the ideas of Islamic design, which typically avoided figuration, to develop non-representational patterns that were applicable to the Victorian interest in pattern and ornament. The patterns that are displayed are both flat and dynamic. Jones saw historical design as a tool for uplifting contemporary British design and culture. These designs invite you into a world where historical and cultural narratives are interwoven, reflecting his vision for a more enlightened and aesthetically rich society.
