W.F. Barber made 'Melkmeisje brengt een kan bij een dame' with some kind of metal printing process. I love the way the interior space is defined by such an economy of line. The perspective of the room is created with these sheer and very direct marks. You can see how Barber applied soft, tonal washes to create depth. I wonder what Barber was thinking when they made this print? I imagine them, in their studio, carefully etching each line, wiping down the plate to make the image appear. There’s something very pleasing to the eye about the use of line and tone.
