Alfred Freddy Krupa made this painting of an old, lonely house with ink on paper. The brushwork is so immediate, like the house and trees have been caught in a sudden gust of wind. There's a strong sense of process here. Krupa isn’t trying to hide the hand; the brushstrokes are loose and expressive, almost like a form of handwriting. The black ink is applied in layers, some areas dense and opaque, others thin and transparent, creating a real sense of depth. The white paint is dragged across the paper, unifying the composition, and adding to the feeling of movement. Look at the bold strokes that form the trees. It feels like each mark is a decision, a response to the previous one. The longer you look the more the images begin to dissolve, hovering between abstraction and figuration. Like Diebenkorn said, “I can never arrive at the place I want using conscious methods”.
