Alfred Freddy Krupa made this ink drawing of a house, trees, and a car, sometime around 2019. It's got these quick, almost nervous strokes, like he was trying to capture a feeling more than a scene. I can almost feel the artist at work, dipping his brush, swiping, and layering. The ink is so fluid, pooling in some spots, almost dry-brush in others. The white paint cuts through the dark, adding to the atmosphere – it feels very raw, like the artist is wrestling with the image right in front of us. Maybe he was thinking about the transience of life. It has this provisional, searching quality, kind of like those early de Koonings where the figure is always emerging and dissolving. You can see the ghost of Kline in there too, for sure. Artists are always riffing off each other, whether they know it or not! Painting’s like that, a big, messy conversation across time. There's a lot of space for feeling and dreaming in this artwork. You can't pin it down – and why would you want to?
