This is Yannoulis Chalepas's sculpture, "Little Relaxer," and it seems to be made of plaster. What strikes me is how Chalepas builds up the form, almost like he’s sketching with the material itself. It’s not about a smooth, finished surface, but about the process of finding the figure within the plaster. The texture is everything here. Look at the rough, uneven surface, and the way the light catches on those ridges and bumps. You can almost feel the artist’s hands shaping the clay, adding and subtracting, always in motion. The leg closest to us is formed of ring like forms, as though a series of bracelets have been applied to build the form out. It reminds me a bit of Rodin, but with a more raw, immediate feel. The ambiguity is what makes it so compelling. Is it a study? A fragment? The beauty is in the imperfection, the sense of something caught in the act of becoming. Like a Cy Twombly painting that is caught between drawing, sculpting, and just plain expression. It's all those possibilities that make it so alive.
