Boelie Kessler captured "Go en Jan Kessler, zittend tegen een hek in Marienfels" with a camera, a medium that can be so immediate, but also so carefully staged. I love how the greyscale flattens the image, almost turning it into a study of forms and relationships. Look at the blanket wrapped around one of the figures, it feels so tactile, you can almost feel the weight and the warmth it offers against the elements. The composition strikes me as being carefully arranged but also has a casualness. The way the figures are sitting against the fence, the light, the textures - all working together to create a moment that feels both intimate and strangely formal. It reminds me a bit of some of the work of early photographers like Julia Margaret Cameron, who used soft focus and careful posing to capture something of the spirit of her sitters. Art is always echoing, never existing in a vacuum!
