Curatorial notes

Dirk van der Toorn captured this image of a woman and child using etching, a technique that allows for the fine lines and details we see here. At its heart is a motif as old as humanity: the Madonna and Child. This archetype echoes across epochs, from ancient fertility goddesses to Renaissance paintings of the Virgin Mary. Here, in a more humble setting, the theme persists. The mother's protective stance, cradling her child, is a universal gesture of love and care. Consider the draped cloth around the child – a symbol of protection, reminiscent of swaddling clothes in countless Nativity scenes. But here, it’s rendered in a way that speaks to everyday life. It's as if the sacred has been brought down to earth, infused with the reality of daily existence. This image engages us on a deep, almost subconscious level. We recognize the primal bond, the shared experience of motherhood and childhood. It’s a reminder that even in the simplest of forms, powerful emotions and enduring symbols can resonate across time.
