Curatorial notes

John Robert Cozens created this drawing of Italian Pine and Cypress, capturing the somber beauty of the Italian landscape. The cypress, with its dark, slender form, has long been associated with mourning and the afterlife, a symbol carried from ancient Greece and Rome, where they adorned cemeteries, to Renaissance paintings. The pine, often a symbol of immortality, stands here in stark contrast. Together, they create a powerful emotional tension, a dialogue between life and death, present and past. Note how Cozens arranged the trees, almost as if they were figures in a classical frieze. This visual echoes remind us that symbols persist, transforming yet retaining echoes of their origins, engaging our deepest fears and hopes.
