Curatorial notes

Here we have "Tonnen op een kade," a pencil drawing made by Johannes Bosboom. The image is dominated by barrels and containers on a quay, symbols of commerce and storage of goods. The barrel, a universal vessel, echoes forms found across cultures, from ancient amphorae storing wine and oil to the containers of modern industry. Its shape, bulging yet contained, carries a psychological tension, evoking abundance and the potential for spillage and loss. In antiquity, such vessels were adorned with scenes of bacchanals or harvests, connecting the earthly act of storage with divine themes of plenty. Consider how the shape of the barrel has persisted through time, adapted yet fundamentally unchanged. This persistence speaks to a deep-seated human need to contain and control our resources. As you gaze upon these barrels, consider them not just as objects, but as vessels of cultural memory, resurfacing in new forms, carrying the weight of history, and engaging us on a visceral level.
