Léon Jean Baptiste Sabatier created this lithograph depicting two natural landscapes. The subtle monochromatic tones create a textured contrast between the rocky terrain and the soft, cloud-like mountaintops. The composition is divided into two distinct scenes, each framed by a rugged foreground. The scene on the left with its snowy peaks is echoed on the right by a stone arch. Note how Sabatier uses this framing to draw the eye towards the centre of each composition. The arrangement of lines and forms suggests a visual syntax, inviting us to decode the relationship between nature's grandeur and the artist's hand. How does Sabatier play with our perception of scale and depth? This print challenges our fixed understanding of landscape as a passive backdrop. Instead, nature takes centre stage. It is raw and commanding. It subverts conventional landscape art.
