This page from an unknown album is called Administrateurs van Grobogan and was made by an anonymous artist. I love the mix of photographic realism with hand-drawn elements. The photos of these officials are carefully placed, but then you see these free-flowing watercolour flourishes that kind of soften the whole composition. Look at the edges, where the peach and blue hues bleed and fade – it’s like the artist is inviting us to see the world not as fixed or rigid, but as something fluid. It reminds me of Cy Twombly, actually, that same tension between control and letting go. Maybe I'm just thinking about how art's an ongoing conversation, an echo of gestures through time, and that's a kind of freedom, don’t you think? The artist has embraced ambiguity, giving us an image of life as never quite fixed.
