This image of ‘Huomo di Biarma’ was made by Christoph Krieger, using woodcut techniques. Here, the artist has carved an image into a block of wood. The remaining raised areas were then inked and used to print the image onto paper. The dense network of lines forming the man’s clothing and weapons, as well as the borders, indicates the immense skill and labor involved in the block's carving. Krieger expertly uses line weight to create light and shadow, giving depth and volume to the figure and ornamental motifs. The final print quality depended on the quality of the paper, the precision of the inking, and the pressure applied during printing. The choice of woodcut for this image speaks to a pre-industrial mode of production, where the hand of the artist is evident in every stage. Yet, prints like these were also part of a burgeoning print culture, consumed on a mass scale. Appreciating this artwork lies not just in its aesthetic, but also in understanding its place within a broader landscape of craft, commerce, and cultural exchange.
