This drawing, "Het oordeel van Salomo" or "The Judgement of Solomon," was created by Paulus Moreelse using pen in brown ink and a brush in grey ink. Look closely, and you will see the artist used the fluidity of ink to great effect. The fine lines create depth, shadow, and detail, while the grey wash adds volume and drama to the scene. The process of drawing with ink, a readily available and versatile medium, allowed Moreelse to quickly capture the dramatic moment of Solomon's famous judgment. Such drawings were often preparatory studies. The use of ink and brush indicates a direct engagement with the subject matter. This may have been a way for the artist to visualize and refine his composition before committing to a larger painting. Moreelse was an accomplished painter. Here he demonstrates an understanding of both material and narrative. By focusing on the making and materiality of this drawing, we gain insight into the artist’s creative process. We recognize the significance of drawing, and the modes of production that shape our understanding of art.
