Willem Witsen captured this view over a canal in Amsterdam using graphite on paper. Witsen, born into a wealthy, privileged background, was part of a group of Dutch artists who embraced a style known as Impressionism. During the late 19th century, Amsterdam was undergoing rapid urbanization, transforming its landscape and social fabric. The canals, once vital trade arteries, were becoming symbols of a city grappling with modernity. Witsen, through his art, engaged with these changes, often depicting quiet, introspective scenes of urban life. Notice the bare trees framing the canal, their branches reaching across the sky. This starkness might reflect the emotional climate of the time, a sense of uncertainty as society shifted. The bridge over the canal invites us to consider connections – between people, places, and the past and present. What might be waiting for us on the other side?
