Yoko d'Holbachie’s painting “Lisa and Triplets” reimagines Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. This contemporary work invites a dialogue between art history and pop surrealism by blending classical imagery with elements of fantasy. D'Holbachie, whose artistic practice has been significantly shaped by Japanese pop culture, infuses Lisa's portrait with large, expressive eyes reminiscent of anime characters, and horns with patterned skin. Here Lisa is accompanied by three whimsical, otherworldly creatures. Her gaze is both enigmatic and engaging. D'Holbachie’s Lisa is a challenge to traditional, Western ideals of beauty and representation. Rather than adhering to the cool distance of the original Mona Lisa, D'Holbachie presents a character that is softer, more vulnerable, and more fantastical. It’s as if she’s asking us to reconsider our relationship to iconic images.
