This is a linen cloth with a geometric design, made by Chris Lebeau. It's not a painting, but as a painter I can appreciate the careful design, and the process of making it - I imagine the artist working meticulously, maybe at a large table, carefully transferring the pattern onto the cloth. What was he thinking about as he did this? Was he listening to music? Was the world at peace? I love how the simple repetition of shapes - circles, lines, diamonds - creates a sense of order and calm. It makes me think of the way Agnes Martin used to draw grids, and the way those grids created a space for contemplation. It’s very Dutch, very modern and minimal, but also decorative and hand-made. I find myself wondering if the artist knew what his beautiful linen cloth might mean to people like us, decades later. He must have done, because artists are always in conversation with each other across time.
