This vase was made by the Grueby Faience Company sometime between 1894 and 1911. The muted green glaze is so subtle, it almost feels like the pot grew out of the earth all by itself. Looking at the surface, it's as if the pot is covered in a very thin, slightly translucent skin. The color isn’t uniform. It’s got a real organic feel, with a slight variation in tone, like you're looking at a leaf in the forest. Notice the way the light catches on its subtle ridges and valleys. These linear impressions create a visual rhythm that moves up and around the vase. I can imagine this piece sitting alongside some of the earthy, hand-crafted pots made by George Ohr. Both artists, in their own way, were pushing the boundaries of ceramic art and embracing the beauty of imperfection. So let’s celebrate the little imperfections, the quirks and nuances that make each work unique. Because that’s where the real magic happens.
