Curatorial notes

This engraving by Reinier Vinkeles captures a family gathered around a mother's sickbed, a poignant scene filled with cultural symbolism. The bed, draped and elevated, becomes an altar of sorts, reminiscent of depictions of death and mourning throughout art history. Notice the gestures of the figures. The children kneel, hands clasped or reaching out, echoing the supplicatory poses found in religious paintings of saints or mourners. These gestures, passed down through generations, convey a universal human response to grief and helplessness in the face of mortality. We see similar gestures in medieval depictions of the deposition from the cross, where Mary Magdalene reaches out to Christ with a comparable desperation. These images are not just historical records; they are vessels of collective memory, engaging us on a primal, subconscious level. The cyclical nature of life and death is reflected in the recurring motifs of mourning and remembrance, constantly resurfacing and evolving in different cultural contexts, each time carrying the weight of past sorrows and hopes.
